Indianapolis 450 Supercross Results 2014

Red Bull KTM’s Ryan Dungey took his first 450 SX win of 2014 in Indianapolis. GEICO Honda’s Eli Tomac earned his first podium of the season in second followed by Team Honda Muscle Milk’s Cole Seely in third.

Right from the start it proved to be a crazy night in 450 supercross. Smartop Motoconcepts’ Mike Alessi scored the holeshot, leaving behind a number of riders that got caught up in the opening turn. Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto, Yoshimura Suzuki’s James Stewart, Dungey’s teammate Ken Roczen and a number of others fell well outside the top-10 after the early pile-up, leaving Alessi to open the road with Dungey and Tomac trailing close behind.

Alessi maintained the front through the opening laps but Dungey worked his way to the lead before the race reached mid-point. Tomac fought to find a line past the Suzuki rider for a number of laps following Dungey’s pass but was unsuccessful.

Alessi ran into trouble of his own with 6 laps to go however, hitting the dirt and falling outside the top-10. Tomac moved into second but had over 9 seconds to close in order to catch Dungey. Alessi picked up and held on to finish 15th. Seely slipped into third-place after Alessi’s off and was able to hold to the checkers.

Out back RV made up significant ground, coming from 13th in the opening to finish 4th. Stewart went even further, battling back from 21st in the initial rotations to finish in 6th. Roczen was having a successful rise up the ranks too, reaching eighth at one point, but then the German rider went down hard. He later tried to return to the race but was unable to push for points and eventually pulled back into the pits.

RCH Suzuki’s Brock Tickle finished in fifth followed by BTO Sports’ Andrew Short in sixth. JGRMX’s Justin Brayton trailed Stewart in eighth while Tickle’s teammate, Josh Hill, and 2 2 Motorsports’ Dean Wilson taking ninth and 10th respectively.

Villopoto salvaged 18 points after his troublesome start and retains the overall lead. Dungey moves to second ahead of Roczen and Stewart sits 4th.
