Anaheim I 450 Supercross Results 2015

Ken Roczen made himself the man to beat with the 450 SX win in Anaheim, giving RCH Racing its first Supercross victory. Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing Team’s Jason Anderson finished in the runner-up spot, adding to his team’s haul following Zach Osborne’s second-place finish in the 250 class. Team Honda’s Trey Canard put in a remarkable performance for the final step on the podium.

The 22-rider field made it through the opening turn upright, with BTO Sports’ Andrew Short leading the pack. Roczen was right there however and within the first lap the Suzuki ace had taken the front. After gaining the lead, Roczen maintained his advantage through all 20 laps, keeping at least 4 seconds between himself and the competition throughout.

Short lost his grip on second-place shortly after Roczen’s pass, with Anderson pushing up hard for the number 2 spot. The 450 class rookie benefitted from some close racing behind, allowing him to stretch a gap on the field during the initial stages while positions sorted out.

Riders battling early on for third included Motoconcepts’ Mike Alessi, the holeshot winner, Red Bull KTM’s Ryan Dungey, Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Davi Millsaps, Canard and GEICO Honda’s Eli Tomac. Short held to third as Alessi dropped rank, with Millsaps passing into 4th on Lap 4. The Kawasaki rider then had an incident which saw him take a detour off track. He scrambled to return but lost numerous positions, slotting into 13th after getting back to work.

Dungey moved up the field, getting past Alessi on Lap 5 and then Canard made his move on Alessi as well for fifth. Elsewhere on track, Tomac was picking himself up from a solo wreck that saw him fly over the handlebars into the dirt. He recovered but ended the night finishing 20th.

The following lap saw Millsaps run into more trouble, going off track a second time and rushing to return once again. His  frustrating night ended with a 19th-place result.

Meanwhile, Roczen was ticking off laps in the lead with Anderson following a comfortable distance behind in second. Short fiercely protected his top-3 spot from Dungey and Canard, the 2 riders closing in on the BTO Sports ace as the race wore on. Canard got ahead of Dungey on Lap 7 and then 5 laps later finally got the opening he needed to make a pass stick on Short. From there Canard held strong, even coming close to reeling Anderson in for second, but time ran out before that battle could happen.

Short defended against Dungey to the final stages, but Dungey was able to make it happen with 3 laps remaining for 4th-place. Short ended the night in fifth followed by JGRMX’s Justin Barcia, in sixth. Barcia was a non-entity in the top-10 during the early laps but pushed his way through the ranks for a commendable result. Barcia’s teammate, Weston Peick, finished in 6th with Roczen’s teammate, Broc Tickle, taking eighth. Alessi crossed the line in ninth while 2 2 Motorsports/Discount Tire’s Chad Reed finished 10th.

Anderson was by far the best 450 rookie on track during the night. Yoshimura Suzuki’s Blake Baggett finished in 12th, Canard’s teammate, Cole Seely, finished 14th and Dungey’s teammate, Dean Wilson, crossed the line in 15th.

One incident of note happened much earlier in the day. Millsaps’ teammate, Wil Hahn, suffered a big off during practice and injured his arm. He was unable to continue into the evening and his status is as yet unknown.

Roczen leads the way in points after the opening round, with Anderson trailing in second followed by Canard in third.
